Collection of award-winning essays   The Ministry of Justice has co-organized the annual National Human Rights Essay Contest for Junior High School Students since 1981. This program aims to help junior high school students, who will be major players in the next generation, to deepen their understanding of the importance and necessity of respecting human rights, and foster awareness of human rights, through writing essays on human rights issues. Each year, a collection of award-winning essays is compiled and distributed. In 2013, based on three outstanding essays were selected from past award-winning essays, three dramas were produced and compiled into a video titled “Watashitachi no Koe, Sannin no Monogatari (Our Voice, Three Stories)”, which has been uploaded to a website and can be viewed online. In this way, this essay contest program plays a major role in publicizing the importance of human rights.

There are many topics that are potentially sutiabke for a human rights extented essay, However, when choosing a topic, it is important for students to bear in mind that it must encourge analysis and evalution rather then description and unsupported value judgement, and must allow critical evaluation of human rights issues and practices in light of relevent theories and arguments. The topic for a human rights extended essay should focus on a particular human rights issue or a practice of a particular agent, be it a government, individual or organization, linking this issue or practice to relevant theories of human rights. For example, the first topic in the following list (about the political rights of women in Saudi Arabia) could involve an exploration of the issue of cultural relativism versus the universality of human rights. Similarly, the third topic in the list could involve references to "just war" theories or arguments for and against the use of force in protecting rights. The following examples of titles for human rights extended essays are intended as guidance only. The pairing illustrate that focused topics( indicated by the first title) should be encourged rather than broad topics(indicated by the second title).There are copious amounts of information available on the Internet, in newspapers, magazines and the television for human rights essay.
