With this in mind, we can begin to look at the history of visual art asa recorded history of ideas and knowledge. We know that cave paintings showedus not only elegant and aesthetic (even by today's standards) representationsof ancient concerns, but also that primitive man, to the best of his abilities, possessed a functional understanding of the nature of the materials usedto make the paintings. As Paul Klee has stated, "The artist knows thenature of all his materials, for part of his work has consisted in examiningthem precisely, one after the other, in order to master them with intelligence."So, from the cave painter up through current time, artists have to somedegree also been chemists or technologists. In fact, until last few hundredyears, art and science were closely allied. The relationship between creativethinking and scientific advancement has always been close. Specifically, the role of intuition in the creation of a theory or hypothesis, the applicationof a knowledge of geometry, in addition to the use of a rigorous methodfor recording observed experience, has formed the basis for many scientificadvances over the years. Albert Einstein, in "Essays in Science,"stated, "Man tries to make for himself in the fashion that suits himbest, a simplified and intelligible picture of the world; he then triesto some extent to substitute this cosmos of his for the world of experience, and thus to overcome it. This is what the painter, the poet, the speculativephilosopher and the natural scientist do, each in his own fashion."("Principles of Research" from Essays in Science, 1934)
