Dissertation and Defense

The dissertation is deemed acceptable subject to major revisions. Upon completion of the required revisions, the candidate is recommended for the degree. The defense committee shall delegate the responsibility for the outcome of the revisions to a subcommittee made up of one to three members of the original committee. All revisions must be completed and the dissertation deposited no sooner than three months and no later than one year from the date of the dissertation defense.

A must be submitted to the Graduate College at least three (3) weeks prior to the dissertation defense. The staff in the Graduate College reviews the Committee Recommendation form and, if the recommended committee meets Graduate College guidelines, approval is given by the Dean. The academic status of the student is checked to ensure that s/he is in good academic standing. A letter is then prepared by the Graduate College to each member of the committee asking him or her to serve on the committee. The letter is sent to the graduate program for distribution to each committee member.

The paperwork required after the dissertation defense:

When a dissertation is completed to the satisfaction of the sponsor, it is recommended for the defense. Through the Doctoral Office, the student files an Application for the Final Examination for the PhD (Dissertation Defense) with the Office of the Dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, 107 Low Library.

The latest allowable date for a summer defense is three weeks before the last day of graduate summer classes. One week after a successful dissertation defense, the final copy of the successfully defended dissertation must be submitted to the Dean's Office. Doctoral candidates must meet the deadlines below and must graduate in the semester they defend their dissertation.

“Not pass” indicates that committee is not satisfied with the dissertation and with the oral examination, but believes that rewriting may make it acceptable. In this case, the Report of Dissertation Defense should be returned unsigned with a letter from the supervisor reporting not pass.

The Dissertation Defense aims to accomplish two goals

On successful completion of the proposal defense, the members of a student's dissertation defense committee sign the , after which the student is officially admitted to candidacy for the Ph.D. A final copy of the dissertation proposal must be submitted to the Graduate Director for placement in the student’s files. Although many students find it useful to do some preliminary data collection before their dissertation proposal defense, students are normally expected to wait to conduct the bulk of their dissertation-related data collection until after they have successfully defended their proposals and thus become Ph.D. candidates.

PhD Dissertation Defense Policy The Defense and its Purpose

The dissertation is defended before a University-wide committee of five, including the sponsor (the major adviser), the chairperson (a tenured member of the Faculty of Business), a third inside reader (who must be a member of the Faculty of Business), and two outside examiners (each must hold a PhD). The student’s sponsor works with the student to help select the committee, which is then subject to the approval of the assistant dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. The Doctoral Office assists in selecting the committee members, getting committee approval and scheduling the defense.
